Surface Tensions
In 2014, the performance/object piece Biting and Sucking was revised for the exhibition “Surface Tensions” . Rather than reuse the stands previously created for the 2006 “Sundown Salon's" exhibition, "Where", the lollipop stands were re-designed to platform the work as if they were being showcased as a commercial object.
Although, (and perhaps due to Hoffman’s lack of commercial design training), upon construction, the stands began to take on less of the context of a high-end boutique and more of an early 1990’s mall candy store with a strong reference to "Barbie and the Rockers". The artist was fine with this, as she liked to reimagine the objects as rock stars The Lolli’s who were about to step on stage and blow the minds of countless pre-teens. However, all being said- Hoffman is not expecting a call from Mattel’s product design department anytime soon.
